Citadel Hill was first fortified in 1749, the same year the town of Halifax was founded. The fortifications were rebuilt to defend the town of Halifax from various enemies over time. There has been four different fortifications built and modified on Citadel Hill over the many years. The construction and levelling of the hill dropped the summit by ten to twelve metres.
