Altneuschul, in the Jewish quarter, is Europe's oldest medieval synagogue still standing.
The Old-New Synagogue is also called Alt-neu-schul, which means "old-new-school" in German and Yiddish. It was completed in 1270 in gothic style. Legend has it that "its foundation stones were brought by angels from the destroyed Temple of Jerusalem." This sacred building came to be called Old-New in the 1500s, after more synagogues were built.
