* Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus (AD 240 - AD 311)
* Diocletian began to reign A.D. 284 and revived the declining Roman empire. His parents had been the slaves of a Roman Senator and he had risen from this low station to the highest positions in the army.
* Finding the empire too large to be governed by a single ruler, Diocletian split it into East and West.
* He mounted some of the fiercest Christian persecutions of the early Church in the Empire. Diocletian passed laws to force people who lived in the Roman Empire to worship the ancient gods of the Romans. The persecution of Christians began in 303 AD, and continued for nearly ten years. The laws eased in 311 when the general edict of toleration was issued.
