* English: Slovak Capuchin friars serve the Catholic community in Eastern Iceland, with their mission centered in Reyðarfjörður. The parish covers a vast and sparsely populated area of approximately 320 kilometers, stretching from Vopnarfjörður in the north to Höfn in the south. The local Catholic congregation is small and scattered, consisting predominantly of immigrants. St. Thorlak church, located next to the Capuchin monastery in Reyðarfjörður, serves as the main church of the parish, hosting daily mass. The wooden church building is unique: it was originally carved and assembled in Hriňová, Slovakia. It was then disassembled, shipped to Iceland, and reconstructed in 2017. The church was consecrated on June 17, 2017, by Davíð Tencer, the Bishop of Reykjavík, who is also a Slovak member of the Capuchin order. The church is dedicated to and primarily features depictions of St. Thorlac, the patron saint of Iceland. | |||
